Disability Advocacy, One Note at a Time with IVLP Gold Star Serhii Letuchyi

IVLP Gold Star Serhii Letuchyi will join WorldDenver to discuss his disability rights work and the impact of the International Visitor Leadership Program. Mr. Letyuchi visited Denver in 2017 and has used the lessons learned here to organize a number of programs in his city of Starobielsk to improve accessibility for those with disabilities in public life, civil society, and the arts. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, this public event will shed light on the progress made and still needed in access and inclusion, and how international exchange can help improve access for all.

Serhii Letuchyi
Musician, Human Rights Activist, Advocate for People with Disabilities

Mr. Serhii Letuchyi is a musician, human rights activist, advocate for people with disabilities, and a 2017 alumnus of the International Visitor Leadership Program. A wheelchair user, he resides in the city of Starobielsk in eastern Ukraine. Following his 2017 program, Mr. Letuchyi organized a review of accessibility at city buildings and shared the outcome with local officials, business leaders, and the public. His outreach led to the construction of five ramps that improved accessibility in his city. In 2020, in response to COVID-19, Mr. Letuchyi helped organize #caring_bridge, an international, online collaboration of Ukrainian musicians to bring people together during a time of isolation. His other recent endeavors include Bet On Art, a youth association that is transforming the walls of his city with murals, and Good Silent Party, which invites community members to libraries and other spaces to listen to music – silently, through the use of headphones – and celebrate diversity in public life. Mr. Letuchyi is an active member of several civil society organizations, including the National Assembly of People with Special Needs and the Association of Youth with Special Needs of Eastern Donbass. He also works as the Events Manager for the Luhansk Regional Library, a cultural hub and creative events space, and is a member of Flying Swan, an innovative musical duo founded in 2010.
